On Saturday, July 18, 2015, Hudson Daryl Willis Brooks (20) was killed by RCMP right in front of the District Office in South Surrey, BC. The young man was reported to be in some distress before being shot by RCMP after apparently minimal engagement. No independent reports or witness statements have been released. Police provided few details even days after the killing. This killing by RCMP once again raises serious concerns about deadly police interactions with people who may be experiencing mental health issues and the quickness of police to deploy lethal force upon encountering people in distress. Initially RCMP reported that an officer had also been shot, leaving the impression that the man they killed may have shot the officer. It was revealed days later (Monday, July 21) that the injured officer had been shot by another RCMP member.
