Woman (49) Killed in Collision with OPP Boat Near Sudbury, Ontario (June 7, 2024)

Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is investigating the killung of a 49-year-old woman in a collision with an Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) boat on Nepewassi Lake early in the morning of June 7, 2024.

According to the SIU, at approximately 4:30 AM, officers with the Nipissing West detachment were investigating a domestic disturbance in relation to a call from a residence only accessible via watercraft on Nepewassi Lake. While en route to the residence, the OPP boat collided with another boat.

The woman operator of the other boat was seriously injured and taken to hospital in Sudbury. She was pronounced dead later in the day. No one aboard the OPP boat was seriously injured.

The SIU have assigned three investigators and one forensic investigator to examine the case. One subject official and one witness official have been designated at this time.


Man (46) Tased, Killed in Sudbury Police Arrest (Jan. 2, 2024)

A 46-year-old man was killed when tased and arrested by Greater Grand Sudbury Police on January 2, 2024. It is reported that around 10:40 AM, officers were dispatched to a residence on Keith Avenue in relation to a domestic violence call. When officers arrived on scene, they entered the residence and tased a man in arresting him. He became unresponsive in police custody and was pronounced dead at the scene. The Special Investigations Unit has assigned three investigators and one forensic investigator to examine the case.

Tasers are not non-lethal weapons. There have been numerous cases of people killed when police use tasers on them.


Woman in Distress (53) Falls to Death During Police Action (March 19, 2021)

A 53-year-old woman in distress fell to her death when Greater Sudbury Police Service officers were deployed against her on March 19, 2021. The Special Investigations Unit reports that shortly after 5 PM several people contacted 911 to report th a person on the Bridge of Nations who appeared to be in distress.

Instead of health supports being sent, officers with the Greater Sudbury Police Service were deployed. They located a woman on the bridge and began I reacting with her.

At 5:44 PM, she fell from the bridge to the railway bed below. She was transported to hospital where she was pronounced dead.

The SIU has assigned three investigators and two forensic investigators to examine the case. Two subject officers and seven witness officers have been designated so far. 

This is a other case of someone in distress dying when police are deployed instead of proper health supports. Many fatal falls occur once police intervene against a person in mental health crisis. Police are not about health and wellness.


SIU Investigates Police Involved Death in Sudbury (September 4, 2017)

Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is investigating the police involved death of a 48-year-old man in Sudbury in the early morning of Monday, September 4, 2017. According to the SIU, Sudbury police responded to a call shortly after midnight and set up a perimeter around a residence. Police officers and paramedics entered the home around two and a half hours later and a 48-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene. No other details have been provided publicly, including the reason for the initial call, nor information about  what transpired after police entered the house. The SIU has assigned three SIU investigators and two forensic investigators to examine this case. The victim’s name has not been released.
