RCMP Shoot and Kill Man (25) on Red Earth Cree Nation (Dec. 19, 2023)

RCMP shot and killed a 25-year-old man from Red Earth Cree Nation on December 19, 2023. It is reported that Carrot River RCMP received a notice of shots fired on Red Earth Cree Nation at about 3:40 AM. They responded and arrested two people. A third person, a 25-year-old man identified as allegedly involved, was located nearby. Police claim that when they arrived at the scene, shots were fired at patrol vehicles. RCMP officers say they exited their vehicles and some type of unspecified “altercation” occurred between the man and the officers. It is reported that there was an alleged shootout, and the man was killed. One officer was reported to be injured.

The Saskatchewan Serious Incident Response Team (SIRT) will investigate the Saskatchewan RCMP’s actions. This is the 12^th SIRT investigation since it began operations at the start of this year.

None of the police claims have been confirmed publicly. The two people arrested have not so far been charged.

RCMP Shoot and Kill 24-Year-Old Man in Moncton, New Brunswick (Aug. 4, 2019)

An RCMP officer shot and killed a 24-year-old man at a residence on Somerset Street in Moncton, New Brunswick on Sunday, August 4, 2019. Police apparently tased the man before shooting and killing him. The victim was pronounced dead on the scene.

According to the Serious Incident Response Team (SIRT), THE Nova Scotia based agency that examines cases pf police harm to civilians in that province as well as, on request, New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island, two of its officers and two Halifax police officers will examine the circumstances of the killing. It is obviously, given the direct participation of police officers, in no way an independent investigative agency.

Police Shoot and Kill 32-Year-Old Man in Summerside, Prince Edward Island (May 27, 2018)

Police in Summerside, Prince Edward Island (PEI) shot and killed a 32-year-old man early Sunday, May 27, 2018.

Details remain sketchy and reporting raises some questions. For example, police reported that the man succumbed to injuries after he became violent during an arrest and media ran with this. The injuries that killed him though were inflicted by police violence, not his own violence. The police statement also says: “During the encounter, two officers discharged their service pistols, injuring the suspect.” But, they did not injure the suspect, they killed him. Again, media simply took the police statement at face value.

Police reported that they received a 911 call at around 12:30 AM regarding an alleged forced entry and robbery. It is reported that there were four people involved in the alleged entry and robbery. No one was seriously injured at that time. These reports have not been independently confirmed publicly. The supposed suspects were found at a home some five hours later and the police victim was killed there. The man was taken to Prince County hospital where he was pronounced dead at around 1 PM.

The Nova Scotia Serious Incident Response Team (SIRT) is investigating this killing. They have had a busy weekend with investigation underway after RCMP in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia killed 24-year-old Bradley Thomas Clattenburg on May 26.

RCMP Shoot and Kill Man in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia (May 26, 2018)

RCMP shot and killed a 24-year-old man in the Westphal neighborhood of Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, on Saturday, May 26, 2018. Neighbors reported seeing a heavy police presence and armed officers in the area and one person reported hearing two shots fired.

The province’s Serious Incident Response Team (SIRT), the agency that examines cases of police harm to civilians in Nova Scotia, is investigating the killing. Nova Scotia RCMP say that police were responding to a complaint about one man threatening another man at 7:48 AM. They state that they blocked off an area between 40 Broom Road and Highway 7 and undertook a search with police dogs. They claim that officers encountered the man in a wooded area and officers discharged their weapons. None of the police claims have been confirmed and no further details have been provided publicly.

Halifax Regional Police Constables Daniel Fraser and Cheryl Gardner Charged in Custody Death of Corey Rogers

Halifax Regional Police Special Constables Daniel Fraser and Cheryl Gardner have been charged with criminal negligence causing death after 41-year-old Corey Rogers was found dead in a police station cell in the early morning hours of June 16, 2016. Despite paramedics being called, Rogers could not be revived. Constables Fraser and Gardner were working as booking officers on the night of Rogers’s arrest and detention.

Corey Rogers death came only hours after the birth of his daughter. He had been arrested for public intoxication the previous evening outside of the IWK Health Centre.

The case was initially given to Nova Scotia’s Serious Incident Response Team (SIRT), which investigates cases of police harm to civilians in the province. SIRT referred the case to prosecutors in Manitoba because the Nova Scotia Public Prosecution Service apparently wished to avoid an appearance of conflict.

Rogers’s death has also been the subject of a Police Act investigation. That investigation is now on hold pending the outcome of the criminal charges.
